BOR reorganizes Diné College administration

The Diné College Board of Regents last Wednesday approved a new organizational chart for the college, adding the position of Provost, eliminating the position of Chief Operating Officer and revising the titles and responsibilities of each vice president.
The decision came at a special meeting held in Flagstaff.

BOR Vice President Theresa Hatathlie said the board hopes the reorganization will prevent a future leadership crisis like the one the college is facing now. President Maggie George has been on administrative leave for three months as an independent investigation proceeds on unspecified charges. Her predecessor, Ferlin Clark, was ousted in 2011 after an investigation into faculty allegations of favoritism, retaliation and financial mismanagement.
“Shared governance and accountability is very much highlighted” in the new structure, Hatathlie said, including “separation of powers between Diné College president and provost.”
The organizational chart also adds an Office of the Faculty that reports directly to the provost. Some faculty members had complained that they did not have a voice in how the college was run. It also creates a “liaison to the BOR” as a go-between between the president’s office and the regents.
