Times’ CEO visits Hopi High journalism class

POLACCA, Ariz.
Tom Arviso, chief executive officer and publisher of the Navajo Times, spoke to Hopi High School media students about opportunities for youth and press freedoms on March 23 at Hopi High School.
Radio student Janissa Lahaleon also interviewed Arviso on KUYI Hopi Radio during the Hopi High Teen Show. Arviso told the students that the Navajo Times is the largest Native American owned newspaper in the nation and the world.
“We’re proud of that,” he said. “We want to have something that everyone can enjoy.”
Arviso said he would like to see more Native American journalists who could tell their own story.
“We do work with high school students,” he said. “We take pride in training the next generation of storytellers. We have internships and some get paid. We are flexible in working with students. Students come from all over the country to work here.”
Arviso said they look for good quality work from students who have good work ethic.
