Boys thrive with school’s hands-on learning

A group of young men and boys were outside of the Dzil Ditl’ooí School of Empowerment, Action and Perseverance helping keep the fire going for the school’s Navajo New Year celebration last Thursday.
Some of them had been at the school since before the sun rose to help build the fire for the Navajo cake they would be baking later that day.
“We had to start a fire this morning at 5,” Jamal Mitchell said. “I just wanted to help.”
Mitchell likes going to the DEAP school because it gives him the opportunity for hands-on learning.
“It’s pretty fun,” he said. “You can actually learn stuff outside and we don’t have to always stay inside and do work.”
