The Navajo Nation attorney general is too busy trying to police the Navajo & Hopi Families COVID-19 Relief Fund, a nonprofit organization, which is providing essential relief support to Diné families with food, water, sanitizer, and essential needs during this health crisis.

I have seen many cars and trucks parked in front of her food stand. Many people sit on a giant log that sits next to her stand. None are practicing the social distancing rule or wearing any kind of face protection.

Big fancy new trucks and cars wait in mile-long queues at chapter houses/distribution centers, waiting their turn to get a box of food. “Oh, there are freebies, let’s pull over and get in line!”

Looming in the background of the COVID-19 crisis in the Navajo Nation is the historical lack of water, a problem greatly worsened by the “mega-drought” that the Nation has been suffering for more than 20 years.

Based on my observation, the CARES Act should be used to help with food and essentials for people living on the reservation.
