When the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe asked Diné filmmaker Melissa Henry for a brief movie about hogans for its permanent collection, Henry knew right away the film they DIDN’T want to make.

Sisnaajiní is the sacred mountain that sits to the Navajo east direction located in Colorado. It is one of the four mountains that protect the Diné people within.

First is mesquite smoked duck breast with a petite frisée nest, a poached hen’s egg, sweet potato twigs, and charred citrus vinaigrette.

Considering how fascinating the history of the Navajo Nation is, it’s amazing how few aspects of it have made their way into books. Two subjects, though — the Navajo Code Talkers and the trading posts — have been pretty extensively covered.
