Howe leads Shiprock pack to win state title

RIO RANCHO

SC_NMstateXC1-SR-girls-copyFor the last three months, Lacey Howe was convinced that the only way to win was to finish as a pack.

But during the 2015 New Mexico Activities Association State Cross Country Championships, the leader of the Lady Chiefs strayed away from the pack in hopes of leading them to another state title.

She typically stays within meters of the second runner and not too far ahead of the rest of the top five runners, but last Saturday she made the executive decision to keep moving up.

She made her first move at the first mile and then in the second mile before she finished in third place overall in a time of 19:31.00.

“We tried to stay together as a pack but I needed to go out of that,” she said. “I really wanted to stay together as a pack, but if I was going to be the one moving up more, I might as well move up much more as I can and pray that, hopefully, the other runners move up too.”
