A school bus carrying 44 students and two chaperones from Bluffview Elementary School in Farmington rolled onto its side Monday evening, injuring 10.
According to Farmington Municipal Schools Superintendent Eugene Schmidt, the bus was carrying students home from a field trip to Canyon de Chelly when it flipped onto its side at the base of Buffalo Pass.
All the passengers were transported to Shiprock and San Juan hospitals, where most were treated for minor injuries and released. Nine students and one adult suffered more serious injuries.
“I’m hearing one adult had surgery last night for a non-life-threatening injury,” Schmidt said, “and a few of the students may have broken bones.”
“I have a great appreciation for the Navajo police, who arrived quickly and took appropriate action,” Schmidt said.
He declined to comment on the cause of the accident, saying it was under investigation.
