PINE HILL, N.M.

Ramah Fair hosted elder day on the same day as the baby contest.

The babies won.

The Ramah Navajo Fair and Rodeo was filled with Diné elders, parents, rodeo contestants, as well as baby contestants who dressed in traditional clothing, wore Navajo jewelry and did their best to woo the judges as they competed in the Ramah Baby Contest.

“They’re judged based on cuteness and the way they present themselves,” said Melissa Bedonie of Shiprock, one of the three judges on the panel.

With four age categories, the eight contestants all did a great job with a few smiles and laughs from the audience members as each young contestant did his or her own unique presentation.

The contestants were: Haliey Alonzo, Calix Curley, Tia Chatto, Kylei McCurtain, Venillopp Martine, Allison Yazzie, Ariah David, and Madison Begay.

In the 0-12 month category, Ariah David took first place with a score of 142 and received a gift bag and a certificate. Madison Begay and Allison Yazzie both placed 2nd with a tied score of 139 points, but both received gift bags filled with school supplies.
